Government Jobs for Women: Reservations, Fee Waivers and Practical Points

Many notifications contain provisions for women that applicants overlook because they are scattered across different clauses.

Horizontal reservation

Several states reserve a share of posts for women within each category. It usually applies only to women domiciled in that state. Central recruitments generally do not have a women's quota, though some forces and services have separate vacancies for women.

Fee exemption

SSC, the railways and many state bodies exempt women from the application fee or refund it on appearing. The fee table in the notification is the authority.

Age relaxation

Some states allow extra years for women, and central rules give relaxation to widows, divorced women and women judicially separated who have not remarried, for certain groups of posts.

Physical standards

Uniformed posts set separate height, run and other standards for women, and defer the physical test for pregnant candidates as the rules provide.

Name after marriage

Apply in the name on your class 10 certificate unless you hold a gazette notification or the document the body accepts for a changed name. Mismatched names are a common problem at verification.

After selection

Maternity leave and child care leave are available under service rules from the start of regular service.
