Joining a Government Job: Offer Letter, Probation and the First Year

The final result is followed by a quiet period that worries many selected candidates. Here is what is going on and what you will be asked to do.

Dossier and allocation

The recruiting body sends your file to the department or zone you are allotted to. This can take weeks or months and happens without any action from you.

Offer of appointment

The department issues the offer with a date and place of joining. It lists forms to bring: attestation form for character verification, medical fitness certificate, declarations on marital status and home town, and bank details.

Asking for more time

An extension of joining time is possible on written request before the date passes. Beyond a limit, late joining can cost seniority.

Probation

New entrants are on probation, commonly two years. You draw full pay. Confirmation depends on satisfactory work, completion of training and any departmental exam that the rules prescribe.

Training

Many services begin with induction training; leaving during or soon after it may attract recovery of costs under a bond.

Pay from day one

You start at the first cell of the pay level for the post, with allowances that depend on the city. See government salary basics.
